Civil Disabilities and Criminal Convictions: Why Legal Services Attorneys Should Represent People with Criminal Records

As legal services attorneys our mission is to use legal tools to help the most vulnerable and oppressed in our society meet their basic needs. This article lays out arguments for the representation of clients with criminal records.

Legal Services Restrictions

Although barred from representing individuals who are incarcerated and from providing direct representation on questions of guilt or innocence in criminal cases, LSC-funded lawyers can handle many reentry law issues. For more details, see the following materials.
